Women in Business / Economic Impact - Recent Study

Just a few interesting facts which were recently published by the Center for Women's Business Research.

Economic impact - $3 trillion annually which translates into the creation and/or maintenance of more than 23 million jobs by women-owned businesses.

28.2 percent of all businesses in the United States are owned by women. However, only 4.2 percent of all direct revenues are generated by women-owned businesses in the U.S.

Most of the programming now offered through the public sector and much of the private sector is dated and focused on individuals who want to start a business. While these programs are important and meet a need, there are few solid programs that actually generate information and knowledge and engage entrepreneurs - especially women and minorities - to grow their business.

Research highlights the lack of knowledge currently available on how to grow a business from point A to point B., becoming an employer firm, and moving from being the technical expert to the business leader.

Observation - In Shelby County there are 16,000 women business owners; only 1970 have employees. Revenues generated by women owned firms in Shelby County, Tn. are less than 3% of the total revenues.

Stay tuned.

You are right. Do you have a Memphis connection? When you get a chance, take a look at smallbizmemphis.com social media site. NAWBO Memphis is one of the core 25 sponsors. Take care.
